Recycling Your Used Boxes

Recycling Your Used Boxes

Did you know that you can sell your used corrugated boxes easily?  Just use your search engine or local yellow pages using the search term “waste paper” to find paper dealers that will pay you for your used boxes. You also can contact the American Forest and Paper Association, as they have listings of paper dealers and also centers to recycle your boxes. Another option is to look up the Corrugated Packing Council.

If you choose to sell your used corrugated boxes, you are going to want to get the most money possible, so you’ll want to pay attention to a few things. First, get any strapping, tape, plastic bags, food, garbage, etc. out of your boxes. When packing, keep the boxes as clean as possible.  The cleaner the box, the more money you stand to get from a dealer.  Make sure to get rid of any type of box that should not be with your boxes to be recycled. Boxes that have held anything that has had toxic material inside should not be sold. Also, if the corrugated boxes were treated with laminate, any wax coating, etc., recycling is not an option.

Ask the dealer in advance about the minimum quantity needed to sell. Some dealers only prefer to take large bales.

If you are unable to sell your boxes or would like to see your corrugated boxes get more use, you can always check with friends and family to see if anyone is moving and donate your boxes. You can also go on different websites such as Craigslist and try to sell your corrugated boxes that way.

This could be a useful option for eBay sellers like me, whose stash of used boxes includes way too many boxes which are either too big or too small for shipping what they usually sell.

Thank you for this information. I’m going to look into it and start letting my boxes make a little money for me. :)

I reuse used boxes to ship outgoing eBay packages, cutting down the sides as needed to reduce bulk, and covering printed areas with tan package sealing tape (or obscuring the printing with black marker). Of course, I only reuse clean boxes in good condition, and I still buy new tape, bubble wrap, etc.. My buyers’ feedback on eBay often compliments my sturdy packaging!

There are churches and other organizations that consolidate boxes. They typically don’t pay anything but it’s a good thing to do from a donation and environmental perspective.
