Ground VS Freight Shipping

Ground VS Freight Shipping

Ground VS Freight shipping

The term “shipping” was originally used solely for transporting by sea, as in “by ship,” but its meaning has since been extended to include other modes of transportation. The original meaning of “freight” also referred to ships, as it was the ship’s cargo, but its meaning has since broadened as well.

 What is ground shipping?

Ground shipping is any shipping that involves parcels being sent by road or rail, it refers to a package that can be handle by hand, normally less than 150lbs. Ground shipping requires a specific packing preparation for the journey, it needs to be able to endure and protect the valuable goods and reach the destination with its content intact.

Some of the items we recommend and commonly used for ground shipping are Bubble and Poly Mailers, Corrugated Boxes or Mailers and Bubble Bags.

Ground shipping is an affordable way to get your products to your customers, especially for small packages and domestic deliveries.

 What is freight shipping?

Any shipment over 150 lbs. is considered freight. Freight shipping is the transportation of goods, commodities and cargo in bulk by ship, aircraft, truck or intermodal via train and road. It can be transported domestically or internationally by land, air or sea. Freight is the products or the goods that are transported. The term refers to the commercial transportation of goods by any means, either by land, air, or sea. Freight is generally the bulk transportation of goods. It is usually divided into air freight and freight shipments. Before being transported, freight shipments are usually further divided into several categories, depending on the type of items being transported, the size of the shipment, and how long the goods will be in transit. Some usual categories are express, household goods, parcel, and freight shipments. Other classifications are Less than Truckload, or LTL, and Full Truckload, or FTL. Air freight, while called freight instead of express, tends to be transported much faster than freight shipments. Freight may be handled by the company who owns the goods, or by a third party, called a freight forwarder.

Normally freight shipping involves bulk or heavy cargo that requires to be prepared in a specific way using a pallet or skid, wrapping and straps, making it able to be moved and transported without damage. This type of shipping requires to be handled in a secured and safe way by hand (pallet jack) or by a motorized vehicle (forklift).

What’s the Difference Between Freight and Shipping?

Freight and shipping are two terms that are interconnected. Each method poses challenges, advantages, and disadvantages of their own and, shouldn’t be used interchangeably. Both shipping and freight are the transportation of goods either by air, land, or sea. Although shipping and freight are both used to describe to a smaller amount. Freight denotes commercial purposes. The shipping of goods can be done for either commercial or personal purposes. Shipping is generally considered to be more expensive than freight since it is cheaper to transport goods in bulk than in smaller amounts.
